“Mi Con Acre came into our lives and gave us hope. He’s just a fabulous horse with a big heart and so much potential. It’s a privilege to own him, everything happens for a reason, and he’s definitely meant to be part of our team.”
- Kylie Moffatt
In 2019, Gus Moffatt privately purchased Mi Con Acre as a weanling from Gavin Sly, with the goal of bringing home a horse that would keep him involved in campdrafting through his retirement years. The purchase wasn’t originally made with the intention of owning a stallion but Gus was immediately drawn to the colt’s style and the strength of his bloodlines, particularly the Olena influence on the mare line.
When Mi Con Acre was sent to Cameron Turner in Warwick to be broken in, Cameron quickly recognised there was something special about him. He suggested the Moffatts leave him as a stud and see how he developed, believing he had real sire potential. Cameron had him for twelve weeks developing his training after being broken in, following this Mi Con Acre went home to grow and get to work. As a four-year-old, he was then sent to Nathan Wilson to begin his career in the challenge arena for his Classic year.
Under Nathan’s guidance, Mi Con Acre showed plenty of ability, placing 9th overall at the 2023 Cloncurry Stockman’s Classic Challenge and achieving the highest score in the Wet Work phase, a big effort for a young stallion in his first season. After his Classic year, Kylie brought him home and handed the reins to her partner Robert Bunn to start his campdrafting career.
Robert took him mustering for his first year, giving him time to mature and just be a horse. But in April 2024, Mi Con Acre suffered a serious paddock injury that nearly ended his career. With only a slim chance of recovery, months of careful treatment followed under the guidance of Steve Rayner, and against all odds, the stallion made a full recovery.
Following this recover, in his very first start back, Mi Con Acre went to Dirranbandi Campdraft and won the Maiden Draft by 14 points. From there, he’s gone from strength to strength, picking up multiple wins including the Novice at Gidgee Fields, and his Open Draft win at the Rathdowney Jackpot. That Rathdowney victory was a particularly special one, held in Gus’s hometown, it was the first time the whole Moffat family were all present to witness the major achievement of him breaking open status, making it a real family milestone.
Mi Con Acre has repeatedly proven himself as an exceptional cow-horse, with his cutting ability earning him Highest Scoring Cut-Out at St George Campdraft, Gidgee Fields Campdraft, Rathdowney, and the Congress.
Mi Con Acre has been campdrafted exclusively by Robert Bunn, who returned to the sport after nearly two decades away. The stallion reignited Robert’s love of campdrafting, and together they’ve built a strong and honest partnership. Robert modestly describes him simply as “cool, calm and consistent, he’s alright,” while Kylie says, “From the first ride, I knew he was phenomenal.”
Now a proven performer and an exciting young sire, Mi Con Acre is being bred to the Moffatt family’s own mares, including those carrying Rifleman, Romeo and Fort Abdul bloodlines, as well as their current competition mares by Soda Justice and Jack Hammer.
The Moffatts are excited to open Mi Con Acre’s breeding books to the public and are looking forward to seeing what he can produce for Australia’s performance horse breeders. With his proven ability in both challenges and campdrafting, combined with his exceptional bloodlines and temperament, they are eager to watch his progeny develop into talented, versatile horses that can perform across a range of disciplines.
