Empowering Breeders
BACKGROUND STORY
Soda Morekat was purchased by Drew Stevenson from the Masters Sale in Tamworth in 2024 off Dakoda Johnson. She is sired by One Moore Daddy, a multiple challenge and campdraft winner on Australia’s biggest stages owned by Mac & Gayle Shann, and out of Soda Katherine, one of Jan Knight’s standout mares and a highly successful campdraft performer. Initially purchased for Drew, she soon became part of Sally’s string at Benalla Stud, immediately showing her talent by winning her first draft in the Baraba Novice Campdraft.
The decision to purchase Soda Morekat was driven by her exceptional pedigree and athletic type. Her natural ability to chase cattle outside, combined with her physical presence, made her particularly appealing to Drew as a competitive mare for his own truck.
Since joining the Benalla Stud program, Soda Morekat has been shared between Drew and Sally, consistently reaching finals and achieving strong placings, proving her value as a high-performing mare. Her notable results include 1st in the Novice Draft at Barraba and 2nd in the Novice Draft at Killara in November 2024, and 8th in the Open Draft at Boonderoo in July 2025.
While she has not yet been bred, Soda Morekat is considered a prime candidate to cross with Benalla Stud’s home sire, Al Capone, with the goal of producing future generations of exceptional performance horses. Sally believes that, given her size and athleticism, she will consistently produce large, well-conformed foals. The plan is to breed her to stallions that complement her strength outside and her physical ability to cut out in the camp.
Soda Morekat is a mare with a laid-back mindset, allowing her to continue her show career without requiring a spell. It is expected that she will be embryo-transferred before carrying her own foal, ensuring she can maintain her performance while also producing top-quality progeny to sustain the Benalla Stud program.
